Project Description

Our overall goal is to produce functional kidney tissues by combining kidney organoids with nephrons that are micro-vascularized and connect to a collecting system with bioprinted macro-vascular and urinary outflow networks. We posit that kidney organoids would serve as ideal organ building blocks (OBBs) for creating kidney tissues with the desired cellular composition, density, microarchitecture and function provided that hierarchical (i.e., micro- to macroscale) vascular and collecting duct networks can be established within individual organoids and between organoids assembled in a 3D tissue matrix.
